- To commemorate the arrival of "The First Fleet" at Sydney Cove in 1788
- The First Fleet comprised of 11 ships and was commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip
- The First Fleet contained
- 10 civil officers
- 212 marines
- 28 wives, 17 children of the marines
- 81 free persons
- 504 male convicts
- 192 female convicts
- 1994, all states and territories began celebrating this date as a unified public holiday!
